Abbot’s Hill

Abbot’s Hill is an independent co-educational day school for children aged 3 to 16, set in 76 acres of Hertfordshire parkland on the edge of Hemel Hempstead. Founded in 1912 and centred on a Grade II-era Victorian mansion, the school combines a rich heritage with a clear, modern purpose: Brilliance in Balance. That approach earned national recognition when The Sunday Times Parent Power Schools Guide named Abbot’s Hill its Independent 11–16 School of the Year 2026. Academic ambition runs through every stage of the school, and GCSE results are consistently strong. Small classes, averaging 14 pupils, mean every child is known, stretched and supported.

That same attention to the individual underpins the school’s pastoral care, which is central to its reputation. Staff know pupils well, learning support has been recognised in the Muddy Stilettos Best Schools Awards, and the school’s inclusive ethos ensures children of all strengths feel confident to take part. Opportunities extend well beyond the classroom, from sport, music and drama to STEM, where the school was an awards finalist in 2025, and the grounds themselves become a place to learn, play and explore.

Because Abbot’s Hill finishes at 16, Year 11 pupils are the leaders of the school, taking on roles as prefects, mentors and ambassadors at an age when their peers elsewhere are still in the middle of a senior school. Pupils leave confident, independent and well-prepared for the move to sixth form and beyond. With a school bus network serving Hertfordshire and surrounding areas, the school is easily reached from St Albans, Berkhamsted, Harpenden and Tring. Boys and girls are now welcomed throughout the school.

Open Days

The main school Open Day happens on a Saturday morning in September each year, and this is supplemented with School in Action Mornings in the Autumn and Summer Terms.  Private Visits, incorporating a meeting with the Head and a tour of the school site, are available year round.
