King’s School, Canterbury

"One of the oldest schools in the country."

The King’s School

The King’s School, Canterbury is one of the country’s leading co-educational boarding and day schools, located in the idyllic surroundings of the Precincts of Canterbury Cathedral, just one hour from Central London.

The School has a strong academic curriculum that is continually adapting to encompass the ever-changing demands of modern education and almost all our pupils go on to further education at leading universities in the UK and abroad.

We also believe that much of what is most valuable in education takes place outside the classroom. The wide-ranging co-curricular programme has been developed to provide opportunities for all pupils to discover their passions and encourage them to develop these talents as best as possible. Art, Drama, Music and Sport play a large role in school life, alongside the Combined Cadet Force, the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and numerous other activities to suit all tastes. King’s Week, the School’s own festival of arts at the end of the summer term, involves hundreds of pupils in a showcase of creativity ending each academic year on a fitting note of achievement and enjoyment. Music is a central part of life at the School with a range of disciplines flourishing, from a large Symphony Orchestra, to a 40-voice SATB choir of Cathedral Standard.

The main school site is situated in the Precincts of Canterbury Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, providing a beautiful and inspiring backdrop to what has been described as ‘a university for young people’. Further sites include the historic St Augustine’s Abbey, a 22-acre multi-purpose sports field with a pavilion, and a purpose-built sports recreation centre owned and managed by the School.

Jude Lowson

We are delighted to have appointed Jude Lowson, as our first female Head since the school was originally founded in Canterbury in 597.

Ms Lowson has exceptional academic credentials, having worked in some of the UK’s top performing schools.  She is currently the Senior Deputy Head of King’s College School, Wimbledon. Prior to that, she was Deputy Head, Academic at Putney High having started her teaching career at Whitgift School. She holds an MA in History from the University of Cambridge.

Her experience extends beyond teaching as she originally started her career in some of the UK’s leading communications agencies.  Importantly, she brings a fresh and modern outlook, a focus on the future and a great sense of ambition for the school matched by an authentic connection with its values and ethos.

“It is a tremendous honour to have been appointed to the position of Head of King’s, Canterbury.  The school has an enviable reputation for co-curricular and academic excellence, and I am excited to have the opportunity to strengthen this further whilst also cherishing the unique ethos of this very special school. The school’s character, exceptional facilities and historic setting mean that it is perfectly placed to provide an outstanding education for its pupils, preparing them for an exciting and fulfilling future. I am very much looking forward to leading the school in its next chapter.”

Open Mornings

Our Open Mornings begin at 9.15am with a welcome brunch and an opportunity to speak to senior members of staff and Housemasters/Housemistresses before a welcome from the Head at 10.00am. The Director of Admissions will then present an introduction to King’s ahead of a tour of the School with a current pupil which will include a visit to a boarding or day house, as required.  Upon returning to our St Augustine’s campus, a panel of boarding and day pupils are available to answer your questions about life at King’s. This is a very informative way to gain insight into many aspects of the academic and co-curricular lives of the King’s pupils. Families may then wish to explore the historic city of Canterbury and are invited to experience the sporting life of King’s during the afternoon School matches.

Our next Open Mornings are below.
